So a few months ago I changed the SD card on my 3DS because of memory shortage and on the new SD card I updated the firmware. A few weeks later I realised my old SD would not be read on the 3DS for some reason, and I believe that reason is that the SD card has a different firmware version attached to it, thus the 3DS doesn't feel like reading it (I believe Nintendo was afraid somebody would find a way to exploit this, but people found other ways to do it anyway, good job Nintendo).
